When I became a teacher, I had NO idea how to teach students to read! 📚 I had a self-contained class with 14 students who were waiting for me to learn how to teach them. And you know what? I STUNK. Big time. So, after my second year teaching, I finally decided to fill in the gaps left by my teacher preparation program. I paid out of pocket for a 60-hour Orton-Gillingham certification course and it was the best money I ever spent!

I spent that summer working with an Orton-Gillingham fellow, reading, laminating all the things, and learning what it takes to be an effective reading teacher. Since then, I’ve finished my masters, taken dozens of courses on structured literacy and multisensory math, and presented at conferences. My students have made exceptional growth in reading and I credit it all to the time I spent learning how to teach students to read using a structured literacy approach.
